Billets
Billets are semi-finished steel products with a square cross section usually up to 160 mm x 160 mm. This product is continuously cast and is then transformed by rolling in rolling mill to obtain finished products like Wire Rod, Ribbed Coil, Merchant Bars and other sections

At SEML, billets are produced using continuous casting process. The molten steel is continuously cast via a tundish into a water-cooled copper mold causing a thin shell to solidify. This “strand” is then withdrawn through a set of guiding rolls and further cooled by spraying with a fine water mist. The solidified shell continues to thicken until the strand is fully solidified. Finally, the strand is cut into desired lengths and these are either discharged to a storage area or send to the rolling mill directly for hot rolling. Our annual billet production capacity is 3,20,000 MT.

Wire rods are hot rolled products from hot charged billets. Wire rod making process is practically elongation of billet in almost 20-25 stages and the final wire dia is 5.5 to 10 mm as per market demand. To make it cost beneficial hot billet is rolled directly from Continues Casting Machine (CCM) to save the cost of coal/ oil or coal gas etc. Wire rode is further being elongated in cold condition to make HB Wire. Our annual billet production capacity is 2,50,000 MT. Specification specification is as under

Product Size Chemical composition UTS (N/mm2) YS (N/mm2) % Elongation
Wire Rods & Ribbed Coil 5.50 to 10 mm As per MS grade 470-510 330-370 Min 33

HB Wires Wire rods are cold drawn to HB wires to sizes 6 SWG to 14 SWG.
